I was talking to my brother last night and then he passed the phone over to my SIL. Somehow we got into a conversation about our aging dogs. I made the comment that "old man" couldn't even jump off the tailgate of our truck the other day and that Rick had to lift him off. We have noticed him aging alot lately. When he gets up he is stiff and slow, hesitates to go down stairs and just isn't the bouncy boy he used to be.
The problem was that my oldest daughter heard the conversation and took it very much to heart. She landed up crying, sobbing actually, in the bath last night. The thought of losing him at any point makes her come unglued. She loves her puppy that much. We have told her that he might live a long long time yet. He only just turned 11.
After that conversation I had to leave home because I was meeting some friends for a movie. When I came home later that night I went on the rounds to tuck everyone in before I headed to bed. When I went into Bugsy's room there was Jesse sleeping on her blanket on the floor. Apparently she couldn't sleep and needed to be near her dog.
The funny thing was Jesse looked at me like he belonged there.
He looked at me like he had always slept in her room.
He looked like he definately wasn't going anywhere.
I smiled and slid him back onto Bugsy's blanket and thought I wasn't going to mess with a girl and her dog.
I do wonder however where Jesse might be sleeping tonight?

I hope your dog will be around for a long long time yet! My mother in law lost her dog this year and we all still get emotional every once in a while.
Beautiful story. Dogs are such an important part of our lives - I recently passed on purchasing a beautiful home because dogs aren't allowed to walk off leash in that neighborhood - like they are where we currently live.
Makes me sad that Bugsy was so upset! I would have also had no choice but to let her buddy stay close by. I anticipate many tears when our old girl passes away. Our furbabies are family....no matter what anyone says!!
in such a wierd, un-understandable way, dogs know what to do in some situations. they just know.
I'm not a dog owner, but I know those of you with pets have a special, special bond. you're a great story teller. I was with you every step of the way, lovely.
This post made me a bit weepy. I have my cat - who I complain about all the time - but absolutely adore!! She is 12 and I know she will be around for quite a while but sometimes I think about when she gets really old and I start bawling!? So I bond with your little one.
Dogs/pets teach us such important life lessons and seem to know just what to do at the right time.
It's wonderful that your family dog means so much to your kids and is a huge part of your family unit. :)
