Maine morning mitts

Here is a great project to keep you busy for just a little bit.
It's easy!
It's fast!
And you can talk and complete it at the same time.
Important things when travelling with husband and kids!

So when we left on holidays at the end of March,
that was just the kind of project I wanted.
I knit one mitt on the last leg of the first day.
Didn't I say it was fast?

If you are looking for the pattern it is on Ravelry.
I used Jasper Berroco
It knit up perfectly!

Really you won't be disappointed.

A "Gushing" New Year

Last night we had friends over late in the afternoon
The boys watched World Junior hockey
Canada was playing the USA
Had a casual dinner, kids played
Then early evening we got ready to go to church for a New Year's Eve party

Our friends were already out the door and gone
The kids were in the van
When hubby ran upstairs to grab something and use the bathroom

All of a sudden I heard "Oh no" and stomping feet
I ran up to find our toilet overflowing and hubby frozen in the middle of it
I grabbed any towel I could and started mopping up the water

Hubby ran to get the plunger,
Worked on the toilet for quite a while,
And then thinking it was fixed, flushed
This time the toilet seriously overflowed
I couldn't mop up fast enough
And watched dirty water pour down between the floor and wall

I was still busy mopping up water with towels
When we heard our oldest yelling downstairs
She had come in from the van, wondering what was taking us so long
Somehow, Hubby thought maybe Canada had scored a goal in the game
How could he even be thinking about that, at a time like this, alludes me

So when Hubby ran down,
He found our oldest mopping up the floor in the kitchen
The water that poured onto the floor upstairs had worked itself downstairs
And was spilling through our potlights, onto the kitchen counter, stove, floor and beyond

I had food on the counter that I just threw in the garbage
After the major mop was done, I took a second to call a friend
She came, got the kids and brought them to the party
Then we bleached and santized the kitchen and bathroom
Turned on fans and left everything to dry.

Hope the New Year doesn't start, the way 2009 finished.
I think I will be able to laugh soon.

A holiday review

Our holiday time has been full. We stepped away from books, computers and schedules and really took time to relax. Staying up late, sleeping in, PJ's past noon. We also sprinkled in lots of time to ski, skate, toboggan, read, knit, watch hockey and play games.
We started with a winter solstice dinner that was simple and enjoyable. The girls asked lots of questions about the solstice and why we have such short days where we live. It was simple informal learning and quiet enjoyable family time.
As we moved into the holidays we spent lots of time together. This Christmas Eve we were all healthy. Last year we had sick kids.
After the girls were in their Christmas Pj's, we spent time reading and singing together.
On Christmas morning we spent time doing our devotions together and reading the Christmas story before opening presents and having brunch.
Of course we eventually got to the much anticipated gifts and stockings. Papaya wore the Santa hat all morning. She absolutely loves it.
With a few dog lovers in our midst, we made sure that there was a special treat under the tree for Jesse.
A few handmades made it into the Christmas mix. Each girl had knit socks in their stockings. They also had one handmade present under the tree. Here is Boo-boo's doll quilt.
This is Bugsy's new bag. She loves it and thinks the colors are perfect for her. Why are we not surprised at her checking it out like an ostrich? Notice the knit socks?
Papaya got a new bag too. This one only got finished on the 23rd! The original one I started got tossed because it simply was not working and I couldn't save it. So under a time crunch, I finished this in 1-1/2 hours. It came together nicely and she has been using it regularly.
Then we had ooohs!
And aahs!
And sheer delight!
Here's hoping that your holidays have created some special memories, helped you find moments to relax and drawn you closer to Jesus, who came as a babe, for our salvation.

boys and toys

On our way home from holidays, we stopped at our friend's house
Visited with their cute "little" boys
Got bike rides from the "big" boy
Quite fun for the girls!
They are great friends and over the years we have had quite a few adventures when visiting.
Like the time they introduced the girls to a real live lion cub!
Ooh and some buffalo too! And neither were in the zoo.
Another time when we stayed they had a rat in their bedroom! Really!
They even had the midnight mission to remove it from their house
while we all slept blissfully unaware.
We even have pictures and video to document it all!
Though the "midnight mission" video would need to be, uh, censored!

Hope we have more adventures and time together

our trip

Over the last few days we have been confined to the inside of our van.
We drove through 4 provinces, from British Columbia to Manitoba, a mere 26 hours
The girls did well! Since I was busy driving, my niece took pictures.

special moments

this is pretty much the start of oma and opa's holiday with us
(back in the middle of march)
we were on the ferry to salt spring island
watching the ferry pull out of the harbour into the ocean
two of the kids hoped up in front of them
despite all the busyness around
the four managed a quite moment or two together
good memories
on a final note, did anyone else seem to notice that march quietly slid by?
it seemed it was gone before it started
maybe that is why april is confused and we find snow still in our yard!?

the wonderful gulf islands

here is a bunch of photos from our trip to salt spring island
the weather for the week was suppose to be inclement
however, though we had rain, we always had a good portion of the day to enjoy the outdoors
for some fortunate ones, this weather in march might be normal
for us it was a great break from the winter snow

home sweet home

well after heading south for 11 days, we are home again
the break away was lovely
everyone really needed it, alot
-----
our days were pretty laid back
sleep in
breakfast served around nine
the most amazing lattes or chai around eleven
(i will never look at a starbucks the same way again)
beachcombing in the afternoon, sometimes for hours
casual suppers
long walks
and knitting once it was dark
the grass was green, the ocean was refreshing and the company was great
forgotten was winter and its cold, gray, gravel-ly blah
forgotten was the "things to do" and the rush-rush
oh the blessing of time away!
